ASI Transforms Glendora Market with Velux Skylights

Challenge

From 1948 to 2018 this building was used as Wonder Bread warehouse, and now needed to be renovated into an urban shopping, dining, and gathering spot for the city of Glendora, CA. The obvious challenge for ASI, Empire Construction, and others working on this project was to get this project done in a timely fashion during the COVID pandemic (this being a challenge for all projects at the time). The more unique challenge for this specific project was to transform this historic facility into something modern, while preserving its rustic and historical essence.

Solution

In order to keep consistent with the direction of the project our team knew we needed to choose skylights that would give enough light to a once industrial and dark space without taking away from the rustic theme.

We chose the VELUX Skylights to help create an airy, open feel in the exposed-frame ceiling and provide a warm, bright atmosphere for shoppers and diners alike. In the images shown, you can see these skylights are modest and practical and do not draw too much attention away from the wood framing of the building — this was done by design.

Result

Once completed, all involved were excited about the outcome. For ASI, it was a complete success to have found the perfect skylights to let just enough light in for diners and shoppers while preserving the historical look and feel of the building.

On September 26, 2020 the market opened and has been flourishing since with vendors like Smog City Brewing (taproom), Dog Haus, Bushi (Jinya Ramen bar’s new ramen and hand roll concept), Portside Fish Co., and The Taco Man, among many others.
